The infographic below explains potential benefits and risks associated with back surgery. All treatment and outcome results may vary depending on other factors of the individual patient.

Surgery is a last resort for severe back problems. Some of the immediate benefits of a successful surgery is that you can move around better, you’re more physically fit, improved mood, and you can return to work timely. Additionally, once returning to work, you will usually feel more productive.

There are potential risks associated with spine surgery: negative reactions to anesthesia or other drugs, bleeding, infection, blood clots in your legs or lungs, heart attack, stroke, herniated disk, nerve damage which can lead to weakness, paralysis, pain, sexual dysfunction, or loss of bowels or bladder control problems.

You are more at risk for complications if you have certain health conditions. You should speak with your doctor or surgeon about your health issues to see your options. For more information on spine surgery, refer to the infographic below.
